How to Write Great AI Image Prompts (2026 Guide)

The 5 pieces every prompt needs

The best AI image prompts almost always have five things: a subject, a style, a camera (or perspective), lighting, and a composition hint. Miss any of them and the model has to guess โ€” usually badly.

A weak prompt: "a goat wearing sunglasses."

A strong prompt: "A highly detailed cinematic goat wearing modern black sunglasses, luxury streetwear style, golden hour lighting, 85mm portrait lens, rule of thirds, 8k, sharp focus."

Same subject, entirely different output.

Order matters more than you think

Stable Diffusion (and most diffusion models) weigh the earlier tokens in your prompt more heavily. Lead with what actually matters โ€” the subject and the two or three attributes you can't live without. Save the "8k, ultra detailed" magic words for the tail.

Use negative prompts

A negative prompt tells the model what to avoid. It's the single biggest quality lever most beginners never touch. A safe starter:

blurry, distorted, low quality, bad anatomy, deformed, extra limbs, watermark, text, jpeg artifacts, oversaturated

Style words that actually change output

  • "cinematic" โ€” dark, dramatic lighting, film grain
  • "editorial" โ€” magazine-cover feel, negative space
  • "cel shaded" โ€” flat anime look
  • "octane render" โ€” glossy 3D, physically based
  • "polaroid" โ€” soft, faded, low contrast

Mix at most two. Three or more start to fight each other.

Iterate, don't over-write

Generate four variations at low quality, pick the one closest to your vision, then rewrite the prompt around that image. It's faster than trying to nail the perfect prompt on the first try.

Try it in Imagoat

Imagoat's Prompt Builder does this expansion automatically โ€” you type an idea, it writes the full structured prompt. Great starting point when you're stuck.
